7.5.18

This was my third consecutive half-marathon with Income Eco Run, which was organised by NTUC Income. It was also my fourth run with them, having did my 10KM on my inaugural run. Thus, this is the marathon I almost joined annually for the past 4 years as well as the most runs I did with the same event. What impressed me most with this run was it is the most affordable among all the running events in SG, well-organised, lots of hydration points with bananas and gels given out even for a HM and finisher-tee. This was also my first run of the year after 'considered' recovered from my plantar faccittis (Heel pain) injury.

My third HM medal from Income Eco run!
I gotta woke up at 2.30am on a Sunday morning in order to board their shuttle bus. That means I gotta sleep at 7.30pm in order to have enough rest for the run. After a simple breakfast of a protein shake and two wheat buns, I started out around 3.15am. It was a 20 min walk from my home to the MRT station to board the bus but I took a cab instead, as I don't feel like walking in the early morning. Once I am on the bus, it pass by some of my running lanes around the neighbourhood and I was tellling to myself, well, that's my preparations. Anyway, I didn't really prepared well for this HM and it was one of the toughest HM for me!

Reached the F1 Pit building at 4am and the run starts at 5am. All folks slowly walking in.

Some thought its a good idea to clear the bladder first

I was at the pen which was not opened yet.

At the first pen and selfie with my running buddy, Ravi.
The starting of the run was smooth and I found myself following a group of 2:45 hours pacers. I thought its a good idea to follow them since I will be slow anyway, due to lack to training. However, my short evening runs of 6-7 KM training doesn't really help me much as I 'hit the wall' after 6KM. I was worried that I might not complete the race as when I look ahead, there are still 15KM ahead!! The pacers were slowly leaving me behind and I decided to relax by going to the loo at a nearby toilet. I took a GU gel later at 8KM and started to run slowly combined with brisk walk. It helps me a bit as I seems regained some energy but it was a struggle all along till the finished line.  *phew*

This was taken around 12KM where we are on the way to Gardens by the Bay from East Coast Park and Stadium.

My mood always lightens up when I see the 15KM signage, which means I am into my last quarter of the run.

The last 3 KM seems longer than usual or maybe it's just me! from 17KM to 18KM seems short but 18KM to 19KM was like forever! Anyway, I recorded 21.91KM in my GPS and most of folks also commented it seems longer than 21.1KM. However, I was glad that I managed to finish the run! It was also a humid run!

My sweet finisher tee!

Yours truly in action, nearing the finish line.

It's very strange... as I have blogged before, when I signed up for a race and with the run just around the corner, as well as with all my humble trainings and preparations done, I kinda felt regret for signing up. That's because I gotta stayed in SG for the weekend and when I think I gotta run a long distance in an early morning, I also felt lazy and started to have all these negative feelings. However, after I finished the race like now, I am looking forward to run more races. hahahahah... Like today, I was checking what are the races for July after I am done with the Sundown Marathon in May. Well, I don't know what is this called ... maybe the 'high' of completing a race. LOL. I hope to do a full marathon soon but I think I am not good enough yet. Let me conquer the half-marathon first.

Just a short post today, and I was having a meatballs pasta for lunch nearby my office. I think I had too much pastas lately but ok la...it's convenient to eat, just like fast food. The meatballs reminds me of Ikea's.

Have a good weekend!!

10.3.16

If you are my facebook friend, you will noticed I usually posted my wefie with my colleagues once a week in our running attire. Well, I used to play badminton weekly after work and I have been doing that for the past eight years. However, since players are getting 'depleted' where some have left the company and no new players joining in, we decided to call it a day. It can be frustrating to have two or three players coming to play though we still love the game very much. Anyway, I might join another group later as I still love the game very much.

Thus, I decided to join another group of colleagues weekly to do some running at the East Coast Park. It was a nice place to run as it's windy by the beach  as well as the running path is wide and long and lots of gorgeous young ladies folks were here to train for marathons or just leisure run. It connected all the way from Changi to Tanjung Rhu and then, Gardens by the Bay. Thus, I can run a marathon here ...hahaha... In fact, I ran my Sundown Half Marathon here last year! And, yes,  I got a half marathon in early April and May, and I have already started my humble training.

The running and cycling path

Panoramic view of the sea , facing Indonesia

Another running path , it was quiet then.

Almost sunset ... nice to run with a beautiful view

Due to time consuming as most of my colleagues have families , usually we will do 5KM (and they are fast, at a pace of 5 minutes+ which left me last or second last!)  but sometimes I thought of doing longer runs like 10km - 15km. I am still checking out if there's any locker services there to keep my stuffs. There are shower facilities as well as good food all over the place, so no problem for my dinner. And, lots of cabs to ferry me back too, after a tiring run. For now, I do 5KM first la with my colleagues.

Oh.. I can't help having another nasi lemak chicken rendang and I am back to Tea Garden in JB last Sunday for the fix. I really love the chicken rendang, it's really tasty!

Weekend is around the corner, have a good rest! :)

24.2.16

I guess I posted too many heavyweights posts over the last two months covering my trip to China, thus I decided to go light today or for the next few posts. Oh, you are right, I also running out of ideas to post or probably suffering from a 'withdrawal symptom' , not mental block.  I am looking for more travelogue to write, actually!! LOL

Well, I actually decided to wake up early to run in order to train for my coming NTUC 350 and Sundown Half-Marathons in April and May respectively. However, since I gotta have my breakfast at around 7.30am or else I be late for work, it seems impossible for me to run more than 10KM or cover between 10KM-15KM. To my standard, that would take 2 hours+. If I were to do that, I needed to wake up at 5am+ to run! I think that's really tough for me, who is not a morning person. And, because of that, I salute the disciplined runners who managed to sleep early and wake up as early as 5am to train! I think I can only wake up at 6am+ and that would mean I can only covers 5-6KM the most. So, it's still back to night runs where I have more time but I will try a few morning runs as most of the runs starts in the early morning.

I was at Dragon-i restaurant at Aeon Bukit Indah last weekend, which I think it was opened not too long ago. This was actually the first time my family and I dined there, as we usually go to Canton-i instead.

My pork ribs La mian ... I must say it's very nice, especially the soup

That 'big' Shanghainese Pau again... my kid wanted it and he said it's so much better than the one we had in ChengHuan Miao in Shanghai, and cheaper too here! Oh, he shared my ramen too, since he had a JCO donut not long ago and still full.

A chicken and mushoom rice for my wifey and little princess to share.

A refreshing pot of Pu-erh tea
I think I will patronize Dragon-i more than Canton-i. The food seems more delicious while I can find the HK dim sum from Canton-i from a lot of places.

11.12.15

I have two friends who joined me for the Standard Chartered Marathon, Singapore (SCMS) last Sunday and both were doing their maiden runs. One of them did the 10KM while another one joined me for the half marathon. They were casual runners who jogged regularly but entering a running event never really cross their mind until they signed up for SCMS. The one who did the HM with me was a fast runner, who's paced for a 15KM run averaged around 6 minutes plus and sometimes he hits 5 minutes +. Well, he was a trained policeman before and I guess that was one reason he can run fast. hahaha... After finishing the SCMS, both seems bitten by the running bug and started looking for other runs next year. Well, me too, after I did my maiden 10KM run last Dec, I was also interested into it and the rest are history, though I only participated once every quarter of this year. And, I am also planning for my next runs for 2016. Well, I guess it is addictive after all and I am glad I have more running companions!

Oh.. it's been a while I had my bento, thanks to my late gym workouts. Here's one to reward myself before the weekend! :)

Have a great weekend! :)

23.11.15

Somehow when I am nearing a running event and after been training for it for months, I kinda got lazy during the last few weeks. Well, maybe I was running alone as well as feeling mentally tired to train for it. Well, it's just 2 weeks to go for the Standard Chartered Half-Marathon and I have been dragging myself to train lately...hahaha. It happened to the Sundown HM in last July where I slacked in the last three weeks, just ran 5km to 10KM only and I didn't do too well in that run.

Due to that, last Wednesday, I decided to try on a different route and it seems works. I managed 15KM on almost running on the border of the little town that I stayed in. Well, Singapore is small and the town's border is not big either, unlike Malaysia. However, it was great as I scaled the border of the town in a round as well as trying a new route. It was exciting and refreshing!

Oh.. and I rewarded myself with a ramen set at Ippudo in Orchard.

Salad for starter

Miso Tonkotsu Ramen

And a refreshing cold green tea!
Have a good week!

30.10.15

I had a great run yesterday evening where the haze has gone and the skies were so clear after a morning rain. I was delighted to be able to run for 16 KM in preparation for my half-marathon where of late, I always struggled in my runs. However, with a fresh body and mind after having a nap in the bus as well as a rested pair of legs, it was such an enjoyable run for 2 hours. I told myself it's ok to go slow if I needed to and most importantly, is to finish the run. And, to take it as a form of relaxation after a long day by enjoying the breeze and surroundings of nature.  It works and I had a relaxing day today due to the endorphin in my system after run and a good night sleep . I sounds like a junkie now...hahaha!

Oh... I went for my annual medical check-up today, which was sponsored by my company at Paragon Tower in Orchard Road. The check-up finished late around 10.30am and with an empty stomach, I went for a light breakfast since lunch time is approaching soon. My colleague suggested we go to Muji Cafe which was newly opened in that shopping outlet.

 Have a great weekend!!

19.10.15

I heard every runners will encountered bad runs from time to time, where somehow, everything just don't work for them. That usually happened during training sessions. The runner could be overtrained, not feeling well, lack of sleep or injured or cannot adapt to their new gears. I encountered one such run last week where I tried out compression socks which goes all the way up to my knees. It was very tight and hurts my calf muscles, which was already in pain after three consecutively runs for three days, though it's only 5KM per run. After running for 1 KM, I decided to take it off and it felt better and I managed to run the next 3 KM. Then, somehow I felt tired and lethargic, which attributed it to my diarhoea a day before and lack of sleep. I only slept for 5 hours plus the night before.

So, I ended up , all in all, managed to run for 7KM before I call it quits, instead of my planned 13KM, with walks in between. Though I felt frustated, the good thing is I managed some exercise.
I felt better the next day, though with an aching calf , I continued to run another 5KM on the treadmill in the gym. My calf still aching after a 2 days rest and I probably let it recovered before embark on longer runs. hahaha...

Oh , btw, my kid was asking us to go back to Uncle Jang Korean restaurant as he loves the bulgogi and dakgalbi. I am ok with the food there and it's also not as expensive as other Korean restaurant, though the food selection is limited there. Anyway, besides slightly warm and clothes filled with BBQ smell, I am ok with it.

Kimchi and vegetables to go along, especially with the Dakgalbi

I think I need to find more information on how to wear the compression socks. hahaha.. .Have a good week!

The haze seems playing hide and seek with us. There were days when it was so bad that I gotta do my runs in the gym, which was packed with people. The treadmills were all full house and I gotta wait for my turn in order to be able to run. And, I dislike running  too long on a treadmill as I usually ends by 5 KM. It's too boring already though I can do some pace runs like 4 * 400 meters in a fast pace. However, I usually just do a 5KM run after a strength workout and leave for home. Then, on a nice day where the haze decided to take an 'off-day', I will try to take the opportunity to run outdoors.

Anyway, this episode of haze has somewhat affected my humble training for my half-marathon scheduled in early Dec for the Standard Chartered run. Hopefully, the situation will improve as days goes by... It got better today and yesterday and I managed to do some outdoor runs. I really enjoyed the fresh air , especially after the rain in the evening and had my wish come true yesterday night. A treadmill run is still not as enjoyable and good as an outdoor run.

Last Sunday, I patronized the newly open branch of Let's Eat restaurant at Taman Johor Jaya. The menu is basically the same as their Taman Molek branch but they included a few items here. There was some nyonya kuihs as well as kampua noodles. I heard a lot of this noodle and glad to see it on a menu. Thus, I ordered it. I am not sure how the good ones tasted like but I do love the texture and springiness  of the noodles. It was nice and great to have some wantons there too!

Let's hope for clearer days .... haze ..please go away!

It's actually raising and not raisin, if you got it wrong. Me too, I was wondering where are the raisins! hahahhaha... Well, this is a charity event which  includes running as their first event. My ex-boss actually asked me to join her for the run where my other colleague also took part later, hearing that this is for charity. Though it is for charity, the goodies bag was actually quite good. They gave us 8 packs of meal replacement drinks, biscuits, isotonic drink, lots of vouchers as well as the Brooks running tee which I love it very much!! We opt for 10KM which is the longest run for the event.

The run was pleasant though its a smaller scale event compared to the big boys like Sundown, NTUC or Standard Chartered runs. It was held at the beautiful Gardens by the Bay and the route was similar to the Sundown Half-Marathon towards the last 10KM. The only complaint I had was the hazy skies where the readings are 'moderate unhealthy'. Other than that, it was really a nice, pleasant run and well-organised! Water points are available almost every 2.5KM...well done!

Folks warming up at 6.30am

It was still dark

What a nice and beautiful morning before the hazy skies

The flag off ... it was well on time at 7am . can you spot Yours Truly with the runkeeper on and wearing a bluetooth earpiece? hahaha...
Love this pix ... taken by the organiser at no cost. Mak Glam just commented that I look serious  in my instagram...well, actually I am running out of breath and finishing line is just ahead..hahaha...

The run was not really difficult except after the 1st KM where we needed to run up the steep path at Marina Barrage. That was a killer stretch I guess. After that, it was all the way down to the Marina Barrage bridge and the terrain are mostly concrete and flat. Near the 5KM mark, there was a grassy path which helps to relax our feet due to the softer terrain.

The finishing line

Took a pix with the sporting runners who lifted up the mood of the run. Well, they indeed finished 10KM wearing these and really kudos to them!!

Initially I thought there's no medal since this is a charity event but well, to my surprise , I got another one to add to my collections!!
Anyway, I found it slightly tough to run in the early morning though I had enough sleep. I guess I needed to train in the morning with the StandChart HM coming in Dec, as well as my endurance. I easily gave up when I was tired and started walking. Probably, needed to improve my stamina and endurance on both mental and physical else it would be tough for me in the coming HM.

Oh...after the run, I had a salmon steak in the evening at Moonlight cafe to reward myself. It was a tiring day as I woke up at 4am and after the run was finished, I rushed home to take a shower before going back to JB and within an hour of reaching my JB home, I was attending church services in the evening. Luckily I didn't fell asleep during service. hahaha..

Have a good week!

11.6.15

With the sundown half-marathon in 3 weeks time, I decided to run for 15KM for the rest of my training. I did my first 15KM run last Monday, after a warm-up run of 5KM on Sunday night. My leg muscles are fine after the Sunday run and after a 'rocky' start during the first 2KM, I beginning to run smoothly till the 10KM mark. And, that was the time where I started to feel tired and the struggle begins. hahahhaa... Gradually I am getting tired and did some walking but continue to run until I reached the 13KM mark. I felt like quitting as this juncture but since I set myself a goal to complete 15KM, I struggled on and tried to eliminate the negative thoughts with positive self-talk. Well, when you are tired, the mind too is tired and the negative thoughts will crept in. It was real tough from 13-15KM and I jogged really slow but glad I didn't give up and managed to complete the training. I ran for almost 2 hours. Anyway, after finishing the run, I was thinking how can I complete the 21KM half-marathon...hahaha... I guess I probably walk 6KM, with a little run, to the finishing line...ahahah...

I joined my colleagues the next day for a 5KM run and my leg muscles are really aching before the run. However, since I promised them, I thought 5KM should be allright. Anyway, by the time I reaches 3KM+, the same episode happened again. I really felt like quitting again as my muscles were really aching and I was tired too. Not sure if it's mind over matters but I will definitely walk if I feel tired during the event. Better don't take risk. :) Anyway, step by step, I managed to complete the run in 35 mins, with my colleagues waiting for me as they completed 5 mins earlier than me.

I went back to the gym for my workout tonight and did a relaxing 2 KM run on the treadmill. This is the most productive week for me and with another 2-3KM slow run on the treadmill tomorrow, I break my record of 30KM per week. Of course, this is kacang putih for the seasoned runners but that warrants a rewarding Sapporo Miso Ramen for me tonight.

Have a good mid-week and stay positive !! :)

20.4.15

After reading SK's blog, I feel tempted to write a post on how I started long distance running which eventually leads me to training for a half-marathon. Well, there's still two months left for the Singapore Sundown and I can say I am not ready yet as the longest I ran so far is 11KM. I needed to run at least 15KM to feel confidence.  And, I didn't train last week except for some short distance runs in 5-6KM on the treadmill as I was down with a diarrhoea which makes me tired. I have recovered now and might do two 10-11KM runs this week. I wanted to gradually increase the mileage, maybe 12KM the following week.

Back to original intent of writing this post. I used to run 2KM every time I went to the gym for workouts for years. However, after getting my Polar Loop steps tracker mid last year, I started to run more, where I went for 5KM. The reason behind it was I wanted to achieve the daily physical goal set by the tracker app. And, only by running at least 5KM can help me to achieve it.

Then, I saw some of my colleagues also started running and with the standard chartered marathon around then, we decided to sign up for the 10KM run. And, its history after that. Anyway, recently, most of my colleagues' interest has fizzles out and they do not intend to spend money to run, citing that we are paying in order to get the goodie bag and medal. That can be true in terms of economical sense but in my opinion, if you like a certain sports, definitely you have to invest some money into it. Even in badminton, I bought rackets, shuttlecocks and book courts and don't mentioned how much folks spent in golf or bowling. Thus, I guess I have to run alone which can be de-motivating too. Well, I will see how it goes, hopefully can find more running kakis. Lets focus on my HM first now. hahaha..

Oh... over the weekend, I can't resist a char kway teow though it contains high calories..hahaa. Ok la..once a while is all right.

Have a blissful week and try to achieve 10,000 steps a day. :)

5.3.15

I just completed an 11KM run 2 hours ago and this was my first night run outside the gym since I participated in a Merdeka Run donkey years ago in 1994 in KL. hahaha... I started tonight's run sluggishly where the lazy me keep sending lazy thoughts into my mind as well as telling me how terrible and dry my sore throat is. It was really a struggle for the first 3KM and I was tired after that. Well, I am not sure is it due to the long day where I was fresher when running in the morning. I struggle for another 2 KM till 5KM with a really slow pace and took a short break sipping isotonic drink. After I reached the 5.5KM mark, I turned back to follow back the same path home. The strange thing is I felt more energetic when running back for home....hahahha..... I can even run faster then 'first half' though I had to slow down towards the last 2KM as I am getting tired. Anyway, I guess it's all mind over matters and I understand mental strength plays a very important part in long distance running. On the other hand, I am glad I managed to complete a 11.2KM run, which is scheduled in my training plan for half-marathon. And....err... I am not really sure if I can do 21KM as I already feeling the strains of running beyond 10KM. hahah...

Meanwhile, I had a braised beef set which comes with a rice two days ago. The beef is not that fat and I love the carrots. It's slightly spicy which I guess it has to be cooked in this way.

Braised beef set.

'Bonsai' ice-cream
One nice thing about Taiwanese food is that they are very creative and came out with cute and nice presentations of food. The above is a mixed of oreo and vanilla ice-cream and of course, it looks like a plant. I can't really tell how nice is it as I don't really had a chance to eat it with my two kids around. hahaha... They were too quick and finished it before I knew it. :(

29.1.15

Thank God my ankle is almost fully recovered and I have been running consistently lately, though I only trained for 5KM. I ran for three consecutive days already since Sunday and managed to hit my usual pace. That was great though I was huffing and puffing due to inactivity for almost 3 weeks and it seems running 5KM quite a challenge to me. I guess I will get better with training. I even woke up at 6.50am this morning to run, despite with only 5 hours plus of sleep. :)

Well, last Friday was the last day of the buy one , free one coffee from Starbucks. I decided to treat my colleague with a free similar coffee as well as a raspberry cheese cake. I love the cake, it's slightly salty, sourish and sweet. Then, I ordered my favourite ice blended dark mocha in venti size. It was an awesome afternoon as I worked in Starbucks till around 5pm.

Raspberry Cheese cake - It's slightly sourish and I love it!

My favourite Ice blended Dark Mocha
The queue was kinda long there too on that day where lots of folks take away the coffee. Looking forward to another 1-1 promotion. :)
